The Very Basic Guide to Afrikaans

 

Afrikaans is spoken in South Africa and as well in Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and others. It's the first languange of more than six million people. Until the late 19th century Afrikaans had been considered a Dutch dialect, but has developed into an own language Nowadays with more people speaking English as a second language, you shouldn't go astray in South Africa and the neighbouring countries without knowing Afrikanns, but I think it's worth to know at least some basics.

Parasites against Rheumatic Diseases - Trichiuris suis is tested in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Trichuris suis is a whipworm. How could a parasite be useful in treating rheumatoid arthritis? Joel V. Weinstock had the idea that worms could be helpful in Crohn's disease; studies are under way. Trichiuris suis dies after two weeks in humans as natural hosts for this worms are pigs.

Trichiuris suis seems to work on activate regulatory T cells such as T_reg  as well as regulatory dendritic cells and macrophages. Therefore the hypothesis is that Trichiuris suis doesn't only work in inflammarory bowel diseases but also in rheumatoid arthritis. The effective cytokine seems to be IL-10.

There is a current study in Berlin, which already uses capsules with 2500 worm eggs for each patient. The study has been powered to N=50. Right now the lab tests should be under way.

And I ask myself: will we see prelilimary results at the EULAR 2015 meeting in Rome?

Rheuma und Schwangerschaft / Rhekiss

Entzündlich rheumatische Erkrankungen und Schwangerschaften sind zu einem wichtigen Thema in der Rheumatologie geworden. Es stehen effektivere Medikamente zur Verfügung, die es Frauen ermöglichen überhaupt wieder den Wunsch zu äußern, schwanger zu werden. Einerseits kann Krankheitsaktivität dazu führen, dass eine Schwangerschaft überhaupt nicht zustande kommt; andererseits kann die Frau auch nicht unter jedem Medikament schwanger werden, ohne das werdende Leben zu schädigen.

Nun soll durch das Register Rhekiss die Sicherheit in der Betreuung von schwangeren Rheumatikerinnen verbessert werden. „Rhekiss ist ein bundesweites Register zur Erfassung von Schwangerschaften bei Patientinnen mit entzündlich-rheumatischen Erkrankungen.“ Es wird vom vom DRFZ (Deutsches Rheuma-Forschungszentrum Berlin) und dem Rheumazentrum Rhein-Ruhr e.V. durchgeführt. Initiatorinnen sind Fraau PD Dr. med. Fischer-Betz vom Rheumazentrum Rhein-Ruhr und Frau Dr. med. Strangfeld vom DRFZ.

„Die Erhebung erfolgt durch ein komfortables, datenschutzrechtlich abgesichertes elektronisches Online-Befragungssystem für Ärzte und Patienten.“ „Der Arzt dokumentiert in der Praxis, die Patientin separat (z.B. zu Hause). Der Zeitaufwand wird durch den modularen Aufbau gering gehalten. Der Einschluss der Teilnehmerinnen erfolgt durch den behandelnden Rheumatologen.“

Rhekiss wendet sich zunächst an „Frauen mit gesicherter Diagnose und Kinderwunsch oder schwangere Patientinnen“, aber später soll „das Register auch auf männliche Patienten mit entzündlich-rheumatischer Erkrankung ausgedehnt werden, deren Partnerin schwanger ist.“

Bo-Kaap

Bo-Kaap is Africaans and means "above the Cape". It's an interesting and colourful part of Cape Town. Bo-Kaap is situated beween Wale St. and the slopes of Signal Hill. The origin of this suburb is connected to one of the the dark pages of South African history. The suburb had been called the Malay quarters as people from Malay, India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka had been forced to live there as slaves. Some of the offspring still live there. The houses are painted very colourful. It's worth a visit and a the Bo-Kaap Museum on Wale St. is open on weekdays.

You might be insterested in looking at the mosque, as Bo-Kaap is also the tradional suburb for Muslims.

I had been quite surprised after coming back to Cologne to find some streets reminding me of Bo-Kaap. I have been to Köln-Mülheim, one of the suburbs of Cologne, since my childhood, but had never entered this particular set of streets. Now, due to parking restrictions I went there and look, what I saw there:

Maybe other cities have their little Bo-Kaaps, too.

Cape Town

Some people asked me, why I'm talking so much and so exuberantly about Cape Town. The reason is simple -: I fell in love with that city at first view. I would have liked to visit the Table Mountain right away to have even a better view, but that wasn't possible due to the table cloth - clouds on the mountains. The cable car won't take anyone on top and everyone is called back by a horn. It simply is too dangerous walking in the clouds / fog as there aren't any safety fences in the national park area (right next to the cable car station are some walls, however).

I started reading Deon Meyer's thrillers featuring "Benny Griessel, a fading policeman on the brink of loosing his job, his family and self-respect." The crime scenes are always in Cape Town and I had the map of Cape Town and vicinity ready as I was reading the novels. I had been fun reading and visiting the city, where the novel play. It also gives inside into post apartheid South Africa.

View from the top. You can see most of the city and Robben Island on the left. There's the football stadium and right of it you see Waterfront. The centre of the city is where the higher buildings are.

You can also walk up. It's 700 m change of altitude! The cable cat brings you up within a few minutes ... Take enough water with you. And sunscreen.

And you can watch the rock dassies. 

Or have a view of Camps Bay, where the richer people live.

Concerning a ride with the cable car: be very, no be very, very, very early as the queue might get very long.

The older parts of Cape Town have a European touch.

I visited the dock area and the harbour. Touristy Waterfront and the hard work area.

Next to the Clock Tower is the Nelson Mandela Centre. I just checked. But I would have had to wait for about a week to get on a tour to Robben Island.

Der letzte Aufguss

Ich habe etwas gezögert, eine Buchbesprechung zu "Der letzte Aufguss" zu schreiben, aber dann hat die innere Einstellung zum Tee doch den Ausschlag gegeben. Ich trinke zwar viel Kaffee im Berufsleben, bin aber privat eher dem Tee zugetan. Das geht  so weit, dass ich auch chinesische Werke dazu gelesen habe.

Mir hat der Kriminalroman gefallen. Lustig und frisch geschrieben, mit einigen skurrilen Figuren versehen. Und nicht zuletzt ist die Geschichte spannend. Daneben erfährt man sehr viel über Tee. Nicht nur über chinesische Teesorten und Verfahren, sondern auch über Darjeeling, die japanische und die ostfriesische Teezeremonie und vielen Details mehr.

Und dann werden auch noch Teile des Gedichts von Lu Tong (卢仝 /盧仝 /玉川子) aus der Tang-Zeit zitiert! Der Scan stammt aus dem Buch 茶事春秋. In "Der letzte Aufguss" ist die sechste Schale Tee von besonderer Bedeutung; im Gedicht kommt aber auch noch eine siebte Schale vor.

An einer Stelle taucht plötzlich der Mont Ventoux auf, der für mich eine besondere Bedeutung, nicht nur über einen Urlaub sondern auch wegen des französischen Dichters René Char, hat.

Alles in allem war es ein schöner, verregneter Sonntagnachmittag, den mir das Buch geschenkt hat.
